You are correct, VCV does not use this. Perhaps some modules do, but not that I am aware of.
There are many better threads on performance, but yes, faster GPU up until it is “ok”, then more power does nothing for you. I think a good gfx card from like 10 years ago has more than enough “oomph” for good VCV performance.
And for sure, as someone here said, make sure VCV isn’t using some terrible GPU while a better one is just sitting around.
And, of course, the very worst thing is a laptop with bad cooling. Like the old intel macbooks, and a lot of “non gaming” laptops.
The particular configuration setting for Rack that I posted the link about is graphics performance, not audio performance.
But since Rack is really graphics intensive, the graphics thread can swamp the audio threads and you’ll get clicks and stutters.
You do have discrete graphics on your laptop, and it will perform much better than the builtin Intel graphics.
But I don’t think there’s been any real move to using the GPU for audio processing. Companies say they’re working on it but it’s actually quite a challenge to do that in real time, and so far it’s not been a serious thing.
@DaveVenom posted the attached patch that didn’t run on his intel machine, but runs at around 41% CPU on an M1 mini. and likely similar on his Macbook Air.
