I’m trying to route simple mono inputs and outputs from VCV Rack 2 in Ableton Live 12, but it appears that everything is always stereo, with no options otherwise. Is there a configuration option somewhere that allows me to adjust this?
Ableton tracks are always stereo, so the issue is on Ableton’s side.
The workaround:
Create 2 tracks with the same source and use the utility module of Ableton to select left only or right only: now you have two mono tracks
Sucks but this is absolutely the correct answer.
Ableton should address this stupidity, but never will.
So you can route only so many because all the busses are tied up carrying empty or redundant data.
Welcome to digital audio in 2026, clever aint it.
That makes sense coming back into Ableton, but like in the CV utility it appears I can only send signal on the first of two stereo channels. I can’t figure out how to send signal on the second channel. I may need to whip out Max and make my own device.
Mono channels can be set for hardware inputs that offer mono channels.
Ableton inputs are certainly not “strictly” stereo. That said, VCV Rack pro daw driver does not support mono output from what i see.
If other software plugins do work with mono channel OUT to Ableton audiotrack IN, then the issue is with VCV Rack (pro) (Audio module fixed stereo pairs).
edit: actually thinking further on this, the issue might not even be with the audio module or rack perse, but with the VST wrapper.
Maybe @Richie can shine a light on this.
I checked Kontact, which I know supports multiple outputs. The VST3 version supports individual outputs, but not the AU version. None of the VCV Rack devices in AU, VST2 or VST3 support individual outputs. I don’t have any VSTs that take inputs installed at the second, so I’m installing Reaktor now to test inputs.
