Copy that it’s either bump the BPM in ableton to match Vcv from a vcv click track I record or record a click alongside the drum pattern and align transients to the grid in ableton that way or buy the full vcv version because then it will be synced in ableton as a vst instrument ?

Even as a vst, sync is elusive. I seem to get it very close in real time, fully correctable later, but perfect sync is elusive to me,

I think the last part of the puzzle is to figure out if monome grid or white whale has any inherent step length I would assume no and that whatever clock I feed it each pulse will advance it one step and thus feeding it a 4x clock of whatever BPM I want will turn each of the 16th steps of the grid into a 16th note in whatever original BPM I started with basically ?

You are correct! When using an external clock, white whale will advance once for each incoming pulse. The gate length will be set by the external clock’s duty cycle. (With the internal clock, the period is set by the clock knob and the gate duty cycle will be 50%.)

There’s no requirement that the incoming clock be consistent. Try clocking one white whale with the sequenced gate outputs of another (or the earthsea edge output) to get an irregular beat.
