Expression Pedal

I’m taking a chance to ask here, but I haven’t found a way to use my expression pedal in VCV. I use the pedal input on my Arturia MiniLab, and it is quite handy for performances, since I mostly use it with Ableton. I was hoping to do the same thing with VCV. I know there is a module for the MiniLab, and I don’t see anything about the expression pedal, but maybe there is a module that covers that?

Probably MIDI - CC module (by VCV, it’s a stock module).

Nope. I really did my homework before posting, starting with that one.

Does the Stoermelder MIDI monitor show anything?

I have a Harley Benton MIDI footswitch, which has inputs for two expression controllers. I connect the footswitch via USB, and the controllers generate regular MIDI CC data, which I can use via Stoermelder Map or fundamental modules.

Are your foot controllers MIDI or regular quarter inch jack connections? Maybe you need something like that.

It’s using a TRS cable that goes in the input of the minilab, which converts it as MIDI. I know there is a minilab module that is really solid, but it doesn’t support pedal input. So yeah, I think we’d need the MIDI-to-CV module to have an extra output for expression, like aftertouch or mod wheel.

It does! It seems to see it as pitchbend.

You should be able to assign any CC value to it in the Arturia MIDI Control Center (there it is called “Sustain Pedal”, but that’s just a name). Simply click on the jack:

Once you have a CC assigned to it (shouldn’t conflict with any other CCs), you can use Stoermelder MIDI CAT or VCV MIDI MAP to map it to any parameter you want.

Hum… I forgot the Arturia’s MIDI Control Center when I’ve replied. I’m unforgivable, since I use an Arturia controller (BeatStep Pro - but this controller doesn’t support pedal).

I thought that, by default, the pedal already had an “automatic” assigned CC…

I don’t have a Minilab either, but I learned today that yon can select "unconnected* devices of any type in MIDI Control Center, which led to this screenshot.

That reminds me, I should use mine more often.

I’ll dig it out and check how it works. The only issue with the footswitch I’ve got is it randomly cuts out using USB power, so the only way to run it reliably is to use batteries and a regular MIDI cable, but then it eats batteries. I have rechargeable ones but they die even faster. Thomann kindly replaced it and the second one is exactly the same!

Also it only sends program change, whereas note on would be more useful for triggering stuff in VCV. I need to look into a way to convert that.

I am just wondering, if the input on the Minilab is meant for a sustain pedal (only knows on or off), will an expression pedal even work there? These usually send analog values, don’t they?

Looks like it has 4 modes of operation including continuous sweep

as far as I understand you could not use directly in the computer , except you convert this first to MIDI , you should use a keyboard for instance or a converter

the image is only reference, I never use that, 45usd , USB MIDI, But I have a couple of doremidi harware and normally is good

An expression pedal is nothing more than a potentiometer; it would be a relatively simple project to build using a 5usd Raspberry Pi Pico.

The OP is inputing thru a keyboard that converts midi. He just needs to use the midi utility from keyboard to assign CC and set the mode of operation.

Mine doesn’t have that look.

You can chose if you want sustain or expression. That is not the problem here

Yeah this is on my wishlist. My request is to see if I can solve the issue with the minilab or its existing vcv module

Midi CAT can patch for you I would imagine. For mystery midi issues it is the best choice.

Does it work if you set the “Pedal Type” to “Control” in MIDI Control Center? It lets me pick the CC to use with that option on my end.
(I have a Minilab 3 too, but no pedal to test it with)
