BewitchingBeat Challenge (November 2024)

Bull vs. Bee

Melody is sequenced with random offsets and the gate sequencer has steps with trigger probability. Bass is supersaw-like and spread out in the stereo field. Lead voice is a saw fed through a formant filter.

Played it loud, made me dance.

Who won? The bee did, of course …

With that title I can only assume you have either read the children’s book “The story of Ferdinand” by Munro Leaf, or seen one of the Ferdinand cartoons. I’ve only seen the 1938 Disney short “Ferdinand the Bull” - I loved watching that with my boy. I only just learned there was a 2017 feature length animated film from Blue Sky Studios / 20th Century Fox called "Ferdinand’ - I don’t know if that was any good.

Thank you! I watched the 1938 Disney cartoon and love the story, but must admit that the track is not related to either one.

Finding catchy titles to me always is a challenge in itself, and I know others may struggle in similar ways.

With Bull vs. Bee, I was just trying the ‘feel’ the track while listening. I noticed the somewhat heavy, assertive bass encircled by sounds of higher pitches and percussion.

And then I imagined the bull meeting our bee. The bee was just curious, looking for food and the bull was simply annoyed, so neither was malicious in any way.

Eventually, the two engaged into a sportive fight, butting heads (not literally) in order to show their own ability and defeat the other. And even though the bull was a million times stronger, the bee prevailed with wit and agility, and a skillful sting right into the muzzle.

I like it! It reminds me of a steam train with a bossa nova-ish rhythm :steam_locomotive:
