I am finding that the Venom Patch Bay routing modules are not playing well with Bitwig Studio (it crashes when they are there). Here is a modification of your patch which is Bitwig Studio (v4.0+) friendly (I removed the patch bays).
Oh, I don’t like the sound of that! I’m not sure how hard I want to chase that down though. If a number of DAWs are crashing or having problems with the bay modules running in a VCV Pro plugin, then I definitely want to try to fix it. But if it is just Bitwig, I worry that the problem might be on their end where there is nothing I can do about it.
I have used the Bay modules running in VCV Pro plugin successfully with Reaper, and I think one other. I haven’t heard any reports of problems in any other DAWs besides your Bitwig experience. If you can try with some other DAW(s) and tell me how it goes, that would be great.
Using the Patch Bay modules on their own is not the issue. I’ve just made a basic patch that works in Bitwig that uses the Patch Bay modules to transmit audio from Plaits to the Audio out and it is fine.
Your Benjolin Matrix Demo opens into Reason without issue.
There is some other combination of panels with the Benjolin Matrix (and some earlier patches that I’ve just assumed was me and modified until they worked) that causes VCV in Bitwig (v4, v5, and v6) to crash (Bitwig itself has not crashed at all).
I am happy to try some other combinations to see what might be the “unfortunate recipe”. I don’t think I’d put too much time into this yet. I suspect I am in a niche within a niche that is encountering this.
I’ve also just tried adding some Stoermelder and PatchMaster elements to my test patch and have had no issues. Maybe there is something particularly unfortunate about installing 4 versions of Bitwig Studio on my system that makes there be some kind of conflict? I’ll conduct some further tests on a different system as time allows.
Again, I don’t think this is cause for alarm or making any changes yet. Let me see if I can cause this to replicate when building a copy of your Benjolin Matrix patch on my end.
Sorry for causing any alarm. I was more wanting to share a copy that worked for me in case anyone else had issues.
I think I am looking at something about my specific system that is causing audio routing conflicts.
My older PC (Windows 10 running Bitwig Studio 5.3.13) opens your Benjolin Matrix Demo in Bitwig without crashing. I can make it crash if I change the Audio Driver while it is playing (not a kind thing to do), but all the trimmings are present in the patch and it voices and behaves just as you would hope.
I am also able to load your Benjolin Matrix Demo into Bitwig 5.3.13 on my Windows 11 ARM laptop. However, VCV Rack Pro VST hangs on loading with Bitwig 6.b3 on the same laptop. VCV Rack Pro standalone (2.6.4) launches and runs fine on the same laptop.
This makes me curious to see if I can determine why my Windows 11 PC is unstable. All 3 systems are running without any audio interfaces and use should be using the DAW or DirectSound to get audio out. I think my Windows 11 machine might be set to WASAPI/DAW vs the Windows 10 machine being DirectSound/DAW. I will need to compare and report what I find.
I do not think this has anything to do with your excellent modules and patches.
I have updated my Benjolin emulation to use the new Venom Multimode Filter. This is likely the last update to the free emulation, as I am working on a new premium plugin with a complete Benjolin module.
